BIL visit

Today E4L and the Scienteens lab visited the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg as part of their sustainability week initiative. Over sixty of the BILs employees took part in a workshop to discover their energy footprint and look to see if Biomass is a sustainable way of powering Luxemburg. During the talk, Yolande Koster, of yokographics.lu made this fantastic summary drawing.

SuperDreckskëscht visit

Today, we had the pleasure to host a team from SuperDreckskëscht who were interested in our Energy workshop. In the summer Dr Krieger had been to visit the colleagues at SuperDreckskëscht to understand how they work, and today was the return visit. They participated in our hands on workshop learning about renewable energy technologies. It was a great visit and we thank them for their interest and questions.

The Scienteens Lab celebrates its 10th anniversary!

Today, the Scienteens Lab of the University of Luxembourg celebrated its tenth anniversary, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. The Scienteens Lab, the first educational laboratory for secondary school pupils in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, organises workshops designed to spark their interest in science. In ten years, it has welcomed over 14.000 pupils, accompanied by 1500 teachers, and offers a wide range of activities in biology, mathematics, computer science, physics and sustainable development (link).

REMAP's participants joined the e4l team for a training on renewable energies.

Today we organised and delivered our Renewable Energy Workshop to REMAP's participants, in the framework of REMAP’s 4th General Meeting held in Luxembourg. People involved: Phillip Dale, Maria De Lourdes Gonzales Juarez, Louis Krieger, Sancho Moro. Prof Phillip Dale (University of Luxembourg) is one of the leaders involved in REMAP (Reusable mask patterning), a project funded by the European Union in the 2020 Horizon Framework (2022-2026). Check REMAP youtube channel to know more about the project! The aim of this training was twofold: (i) to ensure the appropriate formation of the demonstrators selected among REMAP’s participants to communicate their research as part of their outreach strategy; and (ii) to increase the awareness of all participants on effective communication methods with the intent to generate insightful ideas, while leveraging their individual expertise in order to craft compelling demonstrations that need to be true to science.

So Watt? new short video has been released: Unplug the plug!

Hello folks! Today, the So Watt? channel has released a new video! Unplug the plug deals with the energy consumption of different electrical appliances when left in standby mode. To reduce your electricity consumption, turn off unused devices! New videos will be released all over the year, so stay tuned for new updates and do not miss to watch & share them! Cheers!

Energy workshop with the Lycée classique d'Echternach

The new year has begun and so has our workshop in schools. The first of the year saw the Scienteens hosting in their laboratories 10 students from the Lycee classique d’Echternach. The students were very enthusiastic and interested in the E4L workshop as they are studying an optional subject of “Sustainable Future” in their school. It was a pleasure to teach them and answer their questions on renewable energies. They were very keen to visit our lab again in the future to carry other workshops as well (CO2 emissions, Solar cell technologies, etc.). Stay tuned for new updates.

So Watt? : a short video series on energy consumption

This week, part of the E4L scientific staff released a new channel called So Watt?, which is dedicated to answering the questioning and raising awareness of energy consumption. Many people use a carbon or energy calculator to check out their footprint, but are often left wondering how they can reduce their consumption. This channel and group of scientists tries to answer that question.

The first short video has been released on several platforms, and is called Winter fashion - keep warm and reduce your gas consumption. Save gas, save money, save the planet, wear more clothes! Stay tuned for new videos & new projects. Cheers!

Happy new year!

The whole E4L team wishes you a very happy new year! We will continue with our outreach project to reach out as more people as possible, so that we can increase awarness about energy consumption and how we can reduce our energy footprint. Stay tuned for new update.

How can we save energy? A RTL.lu reportage

This week, Olivier Catani (RTL.lu) and his "PISA de Wëssensmagazin" video series covers the hot topic of the moment: how can we save energy? An in-depth reportage on Luxembourg, with different interviews to sector professionals, will drive both specialists and the general public through the different facets of this crucial topic with possible answers and tips on how our choices can make the difference!

FNR Awards 2022: Prof. Phillip Dale shortlisted in the category Outstanding Promotion for Science to the Public

The 2022 FNR Awards night is finally here! We are very proud that Phillip - who is the leader of our E4L project - has been shortlisted in the category Outstanding Promotion for Science to the Public! A great result for this young project of ours! This milestone pushes us to continue on this path, and in the near future we will try to reach more and more people to raise awarness on the energy topic. Thanks goes to FNR, to all of our collaborators, and especially to all the teachers and students we met in these last months and that shared this project with us and made it possible. Thank you all.

You can watch the presention video by following this link. Enjoy it! Stay tuned, and see you soon!

Filming Day: E4L selected to be part of this year FNR video series "Science in Colors"

The Luxembourg National Research Fund FNR has selected our E4L workshop to be part of this year video series "Science in Colors", which will be presented at the FNR Awards 2022. Today, Julie Didier and her colleagues from Super8 came to visit our laboratories, filmed our workshop, and interviewed us (in the image, Prof. Phillip Dale). Soon the video will be ready: stay tuned! And don't miss it!

Energy workshop as part of the Science Club activities

In the last part of their summer holidays, several kids (11-18 years old) joined the Science Club organized by the Musée national d'histoire naturelle. One of these activities was represented by our energy workshop! The kids had the chance to better understand renewable energies in a simple way - and they also had a lot of fun! Thanks for joining us.

Visit of our bike setup by Patricia Ceysens (WeWatt)

We were pleased to have Patricia Ceysens - the founding member of WeWatt - as our guest!

Patricia (in the picture sitting on our bike next to Phillip Dale) came to see how we were using her desk bikes to help visualise energy.

Have you ever wondered how our bike works? When we turn the pedals we rotate a dynamo which creates electricity. The faster you pedal, the more electricity you produce. Patricia was delighted with the way we show how much power is being produced, and how different electrical appliances in our daily lives require different amounts of power to work.

For more information on the desk bikes that produce electricity, please go here.

E4L in the news

Can Luxembourg meet its own energy needs using renewable energy?

Michèle Weber & Jean-Paul Bertemes (Science.lu) try to give an answer to this question in this brilliant video! (Audio: LU; Subs: EN)

By being inspired by the E4L approach, they fact checked our methodolgy and the science behind. Take a look at it!

Scienteens Academy workshop on sustainability, climate change and renewable energies (11-15 July)

Every summer, the Scienteens Lab of the University of Luxembourg organises one-week interdisciplinary workshops dedicated to high-school students aged 15 and over.

This year (11-15 July 2022), one of the workshops dealt with sustainability, climate change and renewable energies, and several enthusiastic students joined (image a). It really was an intense week where ideas, curiosity, and fun were spread all over the place!

Among the many activities, they had the opportunity to visit our research laboratories at Belval: they had a glimpse on how solar cells are made by understanding how a PVD machine works (image b), and saw a 3D-printing machine in action by depositing picoliters of solution to fabricate a semiconductor (image c).

As a summary of the whole workshop, students produced several beautiful and clever posters (only a small selection is shown, see image d & e).

Find out more on the Scienteens website.
